xHCI USB [driver-install] [Intel.com] ===================================== ISSUE: * Windows 7 Install DVD/ISO does NOT contain USB 3.0 [xHCI] drivers; Intel Skylake/Kaby-Lake [100/200 Series] chipsets do NOT support USB 2.0 [EHCI]. FIX: Slipstream the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller [xHCI – USB3.0] drivers into the Windows 7 Install media. Step 1 - Make a bootable USB of Windows Install ISO using Microsoft's 'Windows USB/DVD Download Tool' This utility extracts the Windows Installation ISO to the target USB drive, then adds the required boot file[s]. Perhaps nothing more than bootsect.exe method [see 'boot_utilities.txt']. Tested successfully on active-partitioned USB thumbdrive. Step 2 - Patch USB drivers into 'boot.wim' using Intel's 'Win7 USB 3.0 Creator Utility' OR ASRock's 'Win 7 USB Patcher' The Intel utility mounts, patches (slipstreams) Intel USB 3.0 driver[s], then unmounts EACH image in BOTH 'install.wim' AND 'boot.wim' @ ':\sources'. The ASRock utility [untested] is nice in that it contains batch scripts showing how to add/patch/slipstream drivers using Microsoft's DISM.exe [wim editor] tool. * Also, Step 1 can be used to simply make any install USB bootable. * The Windows utility installs; the Intel utility runs as is, from wherever its extracted to. # Method 1 ========== Slipstream :: Inject Drivers into Win7 Install Media [offline] Apparently, USB3 drivers slipstreamed into Win7 install media works only because MS install process detects and loads Skylake/Kaby-Lake chipset drivers too. That is, driver load/slipstream FAILs if done AFTER install, into Win7 OS, whether done offline [slipstream per DISM], or loaded online per Device Manager [DM]; slipstream process itself "succeeds"; DM process fails explicitly. - Per Utility See Intel or ASRock utilities - Manually per DISM @ Win10PE on offline Win7 Install Media Mount DISM /Mount-Wim /WimFile:U:\sources\boot.wim /Name:"Microsoft Windows Setup (x64)" /MountDir:c:\mount DISM /Mount-Wim /WimFile:U:\sources\boot.wim /Name:"Microsoft Windows Setup (x64)" /MountDir:c:\mount Add the USB 3.0 driver DISM /Image:C:\mount /Add-Driver /Driver:C:\USB3\x64 /Recurse Unmount DISM /unmount-Wim /mountdir:c:\mount /commit # Method 2 ========== Slipstream :: Inject Drivers into Retro Win7 [DISM-applied image] FAILed; needed Chipset drivers @ ASRock H270M-Pro4 w/ OLD Win7 image [DX48BT2 MB] applied to OCZ SSD [60GB] @ Win10PE [Gandalf] ... slipstream drivers into offline, iinstalled Win7 OS. DISM /Image:C:\ /Add-Driver /Driver:D:\USB3\x64 /Recurse Installed 2013 & 2016 drivers [Intel-usb3] DISM success, BUT UEFI/Win7 fails to function USB3 ports. # Method 3 Used on RETRO Win7 [online]; applied to SSD per DISM UEFI/BIOS setting 1. UEFI Setup > USB Config > Emulate PS2 Can NOT update drivers @ DM [online OS]; fails; no chipset drivers. Apparently, slipstream @ Win7 install media works by detecting and loading Skylake chipset drivers too, on OS install. 2. Inside Win7, Install Intel Chipset [INF] drivers, then USB3 drivers Success!
